Red light cameras represent the forefront of automated justice. In the blink of an eye a driver can owe $500. Supporters of traffic cameras claim they save lives and reduce speeding. Some courts refuse to enforce red light camera tickets, leaving cities millions of dollars in debt to the camera companies. In Episode 23 of Las Vegas Best Defense we discuss the legal issued raised by red light cameras.
In this episode we discuss how red light cameras work and some of the legal challenges to traffic tickets issued based on camera images. One New Mexico town is threatening to shut off utility service for residents with unpaid tickets. Other cities are choosing to remove red light cameras. Surprisingly, the majority of red light camera systems in the United States are installed and operated by one Australian company, RedFlex Traffic Systems. An attorney in Barstow California has filed a class action suit over red light tickets. We discuss all the legal issues and concerns by red light cameras.
We also discuss the legal principle of Trial by Combat. The 1818 case of Ashford v. Thornton in England was the last use of trial by battle in a court room. A highly publicized case, the public believed that Abraham Thornton has gotten away with murder. His lawyers believed the only chance he had for a fair trial was to invoke his right to trial by combat. We discuss this unique case and how it reflects on modern highly publicized murder trials
Hosts from the Las Vegas Criminal Defense Firm of Pat McDonald discuss what you need to know about red light cameras, trial by combat, and more.
